Tennessee 38, Boston College 23

In what was predicted as one of the closest bowl games that year, No. 16 Boston College faced No. 17 Tennessee. Under perfect weather conditions the Vols opened quickly for a 14-point lead with the help of great field position. A bad snap on a BC punt gave the Vols the ball on the Eagles 43 yard line and three plays later Tennessee was up 7-0.

The Vols drove 56 yards on their next possession for another score and had the game in control. But the Eagles charged back with an impressive drive only to be stopped at the 1-yard line on downs. A BC score on the next possession cut the lead to 7 at the half.

However, the Vols balanced offense came out hot after the intermission scoring on all three possessions in the third period, including a 69 yard TD pass from Heath Shuler to FB Mose Phillips, to take a commanding 31-7 lead.

The Eagles made a valiant fourth quarter comeback effort, scoring 16 unanswered points, only to fall short. Vol QB Heath Shuler earned MVP honors accounting for 276 yards of offense and 4 TDs. UT's Cory Flemming caught 5 passes for 102 yards while while BC quarterback Glenn Foley was 23-46-1 for 268 yards and 2 TDs.
